Summon SurfMonkey like Magic. It was Epic!!!

It had been five long months since SurfMonkey and I had sat down across from the gaming table for some dice chukkin' and card slingin'. But last night it finally was back to the battlefield. He brought the brand new shiny Magic Arena of the Planeswalkers Tactical Miniature Combat Game. We played two games with me as Jace and him as Chandra. The first game I made a huge tactical gamble and paid for it with Jace becoming surrounded by fire cats and Phoenixes. So much for Jace. Burning for a rematch, we set up another game, same Planeswalkers and went at it again. This time, Jace was wiser and prevailed.

The production values are great and the gameplay is fast and easily managed. I really like the addition of the spell cards to miniatures combat. I would definitely play it again but am still on the fence as to whether it is a purchase for me or not because I am not sure it replaces my Song of Blades and Heroes/Power Legion/or Fear and Faith for me. But the more I think about it, the more I think it will end up in my collection eventually...

The rest of the game night we played the print and play version of the awesome game I Kickstarted recently from White Wizard Games, the company that brought us Star Realms. It is a Magic-style game without all the drawbacks: Epic the Card Game.

Max and I and The HoCrain played it heavily over the past several days, so it was time to get SurfMonkey in on the action. We played an introductory game then we Solomon drafted decks and played a couple more. It is a fast dueling card game that really lives up to its name. I can't wait until September to get the full game and really watch it explode. I foretell it will be huge!

Summertime gaming has been in full swing here at magehammer's Gaming Table. Dungeons and Dragons, Star Realms, Vanguard, and Song of Blades of Heroes have hit the table in the past couple of days. I have also been playing Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game and Battlelore Command like it's my job. I love my hobby!

More gaming goodness coming. Stay tuned!

Star Realms and D&D with the Boys!

Seems this summer is made for more Star Realms. I bought the Crisis packs, slipped them into the main deck, and sleeved up everything.

We have been playing two player and Raid with Dinoboy.

We have also returned to the Quests of Doom. The boys' heroes are currently infiltrating a floating fortress of bone ruled by giants who have been terrorizing the countryside. Their characters have just hit 7th level. Things are heating up.

Good times.

Starshield Boardgame Knights Invade the Geek Cave

Weezoh and Brigid were in town, so the Starshield Boardgame Knights took the opportunity to gather around the tabletop deep in the bowels of the Geek Cave for some old fashioned board and card games.

Weezoh and I got in a pre-game night hand of Call of Cthulhu. Weezoh played my mono Shub deck while I pulled out the Government Agency deck. It was hard fought struggle as the agents of humanity strove mightily against the fecund forces of the Great Mother. In the end, humanity won but by a slim margin. Man stood on the precipice of extinction but was pulled back before he could topple into the abyss of madness. Love that game!

First up was a new hotness: Libertalia! Yarrrr! A role selection game placing us all in the roles of various personalities from the hey day of piracy. Yarrrr!!!

We moved from the vast seas to the monster-infested streets of Tokyo. Scree joined us for this one and wonder upon wonder, the stars must have aligned (or the world is ending), but Iczer6 won!!!!!!

Here he is documenting his win. I have a feeling he will be bragging about this victory to his co workers at Giant Eagle...

SurfMonkey brought our next title: The Dice Tower Essentials darling, Sheriff of Nottingham. I enjoyed the bluffing and funny ways we all tried to convince the Sheriff to let us pass. However, everyone went Gandalf on me (Thou shall not pass!!!), and I came in dead last.

We finished out a most excellent game night with the star-faring deck builder, Star Realms. It was everyone's but mine first time playing multi player. We chose the Hunter (attack to the left) game variant and had a great time. Iczer6 and Brigid did great for their first game with Brigid eradicating Iczer6 and me in one turn. But her husband won the Realms with a culled out deck via Machine Cult craftiness. Well done!

Always a pleasure to game with good friends. Looking forward to the next game night! Game on, Knights, Game on!

SurfMonkey Mania

SurfMonkey came over Thursday night for our monthly game night. This night was particularly busy as the boys joined us for a few games at the beginning of the evening. While SurfMonkey and Max played Star Realms, Jasper and I played some Vanguard!

Then we played a game of Sentinels vs. Kismet (Setback's nemesis). In the end, we kicked her butt.

After the heroes took down the supervillainess, we continued superhero action and played a couple of games of Marvel Dice Masters, using a roughshod draft mechanic.

We split our wins.

We finished out the evening with a head to head battle of Star Realms and then played a co op vs. the Nemesis Beast. We took it down!

Overall, a great night of gaming. Next month: We brave the arena and finally break out Mage Wars!

Summer Gaming with the boys: When not hanging out with SurfMonkey, the boys and I have been revisiting some of the great games.

In the Sentinels game, Plague Rat defeated us. Next up: Ambuscade invading The Block.

Journey Into the Star Realms and a Return to Savage Worlds

Over the past couple of days, the boys and I have been playing through a Savage Worlds fantasy adventure. Max was playing a fighter named Indy Knight while Jasper was playing a saurian fighter known as Kobold King.

King Phostos hired them to find and rescue his son from the Lost Labyrinth where the young man disappeared while investigating reports of orcs in the vicinity.

The heroes with some last minute help from more of Phostos' agents, defeated the evil mage Feltran, capturing him and rescuing the prince.

Also, since Origins, Max and I have been playing a lot of Star Realms both head-to-head and Co Op. On our Con exclusive play mat! Good times.
