Double the SurfMonkey. Arkham Horror the Card Game Is Mine!!!!

I finally got my hands on the new hotness, Arkham Horror The Card Game. If you remember, I play a lot of Call of Cthulhu LCG solo. Well, now, that will now become a strictly one player game as I have finally found my card game/solo experience/Lovecraftian experience all rolled into this thematic, story-driven, RPG / Card game that I am loving the heck out of right now.

I have played through the three scenarios in the core set. I played with Roland and Agnes. The story is really cool, and if your characters 'lose,' the story still continues. Your actions and consequences shape the scenarios that come after.

Of course, SurfMonkey has the game as well as well as some downloaded and laminated game aids. Bling, bling! We have begun the core set campaign together. Him playing Roland; me playing Daisy. We managed a fairly successful opening scenario. But then a couple of days later, we tried the second scenario and got trounced twice. The third time mulligan was a semi successful one, and we now move on to the third scenario at our next meeting.

We also got in several plays of Star Wars Destiny. Fantasy Flight Games has yet another Star Wars hit on their hands with this one.

For his birthday, Maximan got Star Wars Imperial Assault. We have got a couple of games in and hope for much more. However, Maximan and I have also started our own Arkham Horror campaign with him playing Roland and me playing Wendy. Still any time at the gaming table is time well spent.

The other day, the boys and I got in a game I have had for 13 years but have never played. Lord of the Rings Risk. We didn't quite finished, but it was fun nonetheless. And Jasper has found The Precious.

On Sunday of Thanksgiving break, the Starshield Board Game Knights met for a game night of Eldritch Horror and One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Good times!

With Christmas coming, more gaming goodness to come. See you all soon! Happy holidays!!

End of Summer Game Time!

Brigid and Weezoh were in town, so the Starshield Boardgaming Knights met up at Zoltar's house for a night of boardgaming. First up was Dead of Winter, followed by two games of Codenames. We won the Dead of Winter game! I was 1-1 in Codenames.

Games continue to happen at our home game table. I pulled out an old chestnut for Maximan to experience. Dreamblade!!! Still a solid fun game.

Maximan and Jaspersaurus got in some more Imperial Assault. They played an outdoor encounter on one of my D&D playmats. The Imperials and bounty hunters won the day.

Thanks for reading. And I'll see you at the gaming table.

Creating Game Memories Memorial Day Weekend

Sunday night I went to Zoltar's place to sit down with the Starshield Boardgame Knights for a night of Seven Wonders and Codenames. It was great to be in the same space with everyone again and to meet a new friend.

Then Monday I go down stairs to find Max at magehammer's Gaming Table making a character to play solo sessions of D&D. That so warms my gamer heart! He made a 2 weapon wielding fighter named Major Verne. Apparently, Major had some trouble on his adventure. I look forward to seeing where Max's solo adventures take him.

I also made time all weekend for some solo Cardfighting. Ahh, Gear Chronicle!

Monday found us at Grandma and Grandpa's house for a leisurely afternoon filled with conversation, food, and games. Max and I clashed on the mountaintop dojo of Onitama (Max won, btw).

We also introduced Grandma and Grandpa to Codenames. The boys took their turn as spymasters. So much family fun!

Until next post, folks, keep on chuckin' dice and slingin' cards.

Starshield Board Game Knights: Legendary Dwarf Caves!

On Saturday night, Weezoh and Brigid were in town, so of course, we got together for some board gaming goodness. Before we got Caverna to the table, I introduced Epic the Card Game to them while we waited for other Knights to arrive. SurfMonkey eventually appeared and brought Marvel Legendary with him.

We started with Caverna. A few turns into the game, Zoltar arrived and we then jumped to Marvel Legendary

In the end we won! Bashing the Red Skull. It was an overall relaxing and fun night. We shall again gather around the [virtual] gaming table on Monday night for our weekly Dungeons and Dragons game.

Summer time and the gaming's easy!

Starshield Boardgame Knights Invade the Geek Cave

Weezoh and Brigid were in town, so the Starshield Boardgame Knights took the opportunity to gather around the tabletop deep in the bowels of the Geek Cave for some old fashioned board and card games.

Weezoh and I got in a pre-game night hand of Call of Cthulhu. Weezoh played my mono Shub deck while I pulled out the Government Agency deck. It was hard fought struggle as the agents of humanity strove mightily against the fecund forces of the Great Mother. In the end, humanity won but by a slim margin. Man stood on the precipice of extinction but was pulled back before he could topple into the abyss of madness. Love that game!

First up was a new hotness: Libertalia! Yarrrr! A role selection game placing us all in the roles of various personalities from the hey day of piracy. Yarrrr!!!

We moved from the vast seas to the monster-infested streets of Tokyo. Scree joined us for this one and wonder upon wonder, the stars must have aligned (or the world is ending), but Iczer6 won!!!!!!

Here he is documenting his win. I have a feeling he will be bragging about this victory to his co workers at Giant Eagle...

SurfMonkey brought our next title: The Dice Tower Essentials darling, Sheriff of Nottingham. I enjoyed the bluffing and funny ways we all tried to convince the Sheriff to let us pass. However, everyone went Gandalf on me (Thou shall not pass!!!), and I came in dead last.

We finished out a most excellent game night with the star-faring deck builder, Star Realms. It was everyone's but mine first time playing multi player. We chose the Hunter (attack to the left) game variant and had a great time. Iczer6 and Brigid did great for their first game with Brigid eradicating Iczer6 and me in one turn. But her husband won the Realms with a culled out deck via Machine Cult craftiness. Well done!

Always a pleasure to game with good friends. Looking forward to the next game night! Game on, Knights, Game on!

Games Played Update...

I haven't been keeping up with the blog as much as I like. I lost my drive to post here, but fear not, I am still playing a ton of games.

Here is what I have been doing since I last posted:

Three nights of SurfMonkey gaming.
A board game night with the Starshield Gaming Society.
Several meetings of the Red Dragon Gaming Society.
Discovered a couple of solo print and play games.

Games I can remember playing:

D&D Next
Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game
The Duke
Warhammer Invasion
Heroes & Perils RPG (my homebrew)
Summoner Wars
Space Hulk: Death Angel
Rune Age
Dungeon Command
King of Tokyo
Zombie Mod of solo game Thermopylae with Fear and Faith mechanics. I call my mod The Last Stand. I have played it four times.
Dino Hunt

There may have been more games, but I think I got them all.

I will return to more regular postings here eventually, but until then, folks, enjoy the remainder of the holiday season. I will see you again in 2014!

Halloween 2013 Last Night on Earth...

On Sunday night we had our annual Halloween game night at Starshield HQ. Iczer, Weezoh, Brigid, Scree, and Zoltar were all in attendance, joined by Zoltar Jr.

This year it was Last Night on Earth by Flying Frog Productions.

I played the quarterback and the stock boy. Then when the stock boy died, I played the butcher, Sam.

Our group lost the scenario, and we were unable to complete the rite that would have ended the zombie threat.

Weezoh had painted up the minis, and I thought they looked awesome. It really added a great flavor to the game.

Looking forward to next year and getting my brains eaten again...or losing my sanity, depending on the world we decide to lose ourselves in.

Starshield Boardgame Night and the Return of SurfMonkey

Monday night I traveled to Starshield HQ to introduce Zoltar to a gem of my new Christmas presents: Dungeon Command. I received The Heroes of Cormyr and the Tyranny of Goblins game packs. I love the models in each set and enjoy this cool little skirmish game.

How did Zoltar like it? Well, he was a bit lukewarm about some of the wording on the cards and minis games haven't always been his thing, but I think he enjoyed most of the experience. It didn't help that he was defeated on the field of battle, though...

Then Tuesday was SurfMonkey time! He brought a favorite of his: Pixel Tactics and one I was looking forward to (as was he) Fantasy Flight's Star Wars the Card Game! This game is by the same designer as my beloved Warhammer Invasion, so I had high hopes.

First up was Pixel Tactics. SurfMonkey brought a really cool playmat specifically for the game. He also brought Fantasy Flight game tokens. Curse him! Now I have to go buy these quality, cool game bling that I don't really need! Anyway. My leader in Pixel Tactics allowed me an extra action every time. I felt this ability was a bit too powerful, and I easily dominated poor SurfMonkey's forces. The game was essentially over by the mid-game. He just couldn't keep up.

Then we pulled out Star Wars. We used pre-built decks designed for the first play. As I mentioned before I had high hopes for this game loving both Fantasy Flight and Eric Lang. I was not disappointed! I played the Empire, and if it weren't for running out of cards, I was primed to crush the rebellion.

Next game I am going to have to manage my hand and deck better. It is a solid game with great design and--being a Fantasy Flight production--top notch art and components. The art is all new for this game which is a victory for Fantasy Flight. I love the Force mechanisms and the Edge battles before conflict resolves. All of it combines to bring a lot of depth to the game.

That's all for now, folks. Back to the gaming table for me. Have a good one; see you soon..
